Ramesh joined University of California, Irvine as the first Bren Professor in Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences in 2005. Ramesh has been an active researcher in multimedia information systems, image databases, machine vision, and intelligent systems. While professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the University of California, San Diego, he founded and directed artificial intelligence and visual computing labs. He was also the founding Editor-in-Chief of IEEE MultiMedia magazine and Machine Vision and Applications journal and serves on the editorial boards of several magazines in multimedia, business and image and vision processing. He has co-authored more than 250 research papers in well-respected journals and conference proceedings. Among his co-authored and co-edited books include Machine Vision, a textbook used at several universities. Ramesh has been elected Fellow of ACM, IEEE, IAPR, AAAI, and SPIE.
He founded three companies, managed them in initial stages, and then turned them over to professional management. Here is a brief history of these companies.

PRAJA was conceived and cofounded based on research at UCSD. PRAJA inc. was the leading provider of infrastructure software technology for development of event-based information management. PRAJA worked with several big name companies, including Yahoo and GM, and several small and .com companies. According to multiple analysts’ reports, PRAJA technology is unique and is far ahead of other people in information management area. PRAJA was acquired by Tibco in September 2002.
Virage (NASDAQ:VRGE) 1994-2000 San Mateo, CA

The Virage platform enables the integration of streaming video with value-added applications such as advertising, pay-per-view, subscription and syndication. The Virage platform delivers cost saving and increased productivity by transforming video into easily distributed, on-demand content that enhances corporate communication, decision support and training.
Virage became a public company (NASDAQ: VRGE) in June 2000. Virage is currently the recognized leader in this growing market.
ImageWare, Inc. 1991-1998 Ann Arbor, MI
Founder & Chairman (1991-1995)
This was Ramesh Jain’s first company. This company was dedicated to linking virtual and physical worlds by providing solutions for surface modeling, reverse engineering, rapid prototyping and inspection. The company was the leader in its space and was a leader in automobile and aerospace industries. The company was acquired by SDRC in 1998. Now the leading surfacing products from SDRC are based on ImageWare products.
